Day 2 of the weekend looked even more promising! After a rather slow morning at the campsite, we headed to Hohenlimburg. As the only two beginners, Sem and I were both excited and low key scared. Compared to the Erft, this river looked a bit more technically challenging - which, of course, also made it even more fun.

Eerst maar gewoon lekker afvaren
Before we got on the water, Bart gave us a great detailed introduction to the river, explaining the different features and sharing plenty of useful tips. Looking back, Sem and I probably didn't manage to apply all of them right away. Luckily, we were surrounded by so many experienced paddlers. Since we both ended up swimming a few times, there was always someone nearby to help us out or practice a section with us instead of having to wait.

Gert en Hein doen het voor…
So, what did we learn? More opkanten, traverseren, the S-turn strokes, catching eddies, and, of course, quite some of wildwater swimming! Hein also spent a good amount of time patiently teaching us how to surf.

Wel een slalomboot, en dan toch surfen? ;)
It was also great to watch the rest of the group enjoying the rapids, trying different tricks, surfing waves, and making everything look effortless. This Sunday was nothing but beautiful for this!

Lunch lekker koel onder de brug

“Even afkoelen” was het verhaal van Gert.

Aan het eind van de dag…

… proberen we allemaal te flatspinnen…

… en soms gaat dat goed…

… en soms gaat dat minder…

… maar dat mag de pret niet drukken!

As a beginner at de Batavier, I came back from the weekend with a few takeaways: you can never do too much opkanten (unless it ends with a swim, perhaps), always look where you want to go, keep paddling, and, if all goes well, the day will most likely end with an ice cream.
